Headstones in Washington DC

If your family member is eligible for burial at Arlington National Cemetery, you do not need to buy a headstone at all. Arlington sits in Arlington County, Virginia rather than in the District, and the Department of Veterans Affairs provides the headstone or marker there at no cost to the family. Arlington also sets its own specifications and does not generally permit privately purchased markers in new burial sections. We would rather tell you that than sell you a stone you do not need.

The District has relatively few active burial grounds of its own. Congressional Cemetery on E Street SE is still an active burial ground with plots available, and Rock Creek Cemetery in Petworth, in the Northwest quadrant, has been in use since 1719. Many Washington DC families bury in the Maryland or Virginia suburbs instead, and shipping is free to all three.

Washington DC is a federal district rather than a state, so there is no state cemetery board setting marker rules the way there is in Maryland or Virginia. DC burial grounds are run privately or by churches, and each sets its own specifications for marker size, material and placement. 28x16x3in is one of the most widely accepted flat marker sizes in the United States, but confirm the rules with your specific cemetery before you order. Sales tax is added at checkout where applicable.
